Fire crews are battling a two-alarm fire at a Midway District fitness center Thursday morning, and a hotel next door has been evacuated, officials said.
The fire was reported just before 6:20 a.m., and when crews arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the Victory MMA & Fitness gym, located in a shopping center on Midway Drive near Sports Arena Boulevard. Officials said they saw him leaving.
A San Diego Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said in an online report that all occupants were out of the building when crews arrived. More than 80 firefighters were called to the scene.
Midway Drive between Kemper and Duke streets is closed in both directions due to the fire.
Fire officials said a building resident saw fire coming from a heating unit in the gym’s sauna. Fire investigators are investigating the cause of the fire.
“Firefighters searched the entire fitness center building and did not find anyone inside. Firefighting efforts are progressing well,” the fire department reported.
San Diego police evacuated guests from the Wyndham Garden San Diego Hotel on Sports Arena Boulevard, just north of the gym, a police spokeswoman said.
San Diego police said a mixed martial arts class was in progress, but all members of the gym were evacuated before staff arrived and firefighters began extinguishing the fire. The nearby Wyndham Garden Hotel was also evacuated.
According to SDFD, someone reported seeing a fire in the sauna’s heating unit. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire was still burning at about 7 a.m.
