Kerala: A case has been filed against two government school teachers following the tragic suicide of a class 7 student.
The boy was found hanging at his home in Alappuzha, a coastal district of Kerala. The victim’s family claims that the student committed suicide on the night of February 15 after being physically and mentally abused by certain teachers at the school.
Police have registered a case against the teachers under Section 324 of the IPC for voluntarily causing harm and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, which is non-bailable.
According to the parents’ complaint, their son was publicly beaten with a cane by his teachers in front of his classmates.
His parents also claim that he was pushed to the brink by persistent physical and mental harassment from his teachers.
An investigation has been launched into this matter and further action will be taken based on the findings. The police officer in charge of the case did not release additional information about the accused teacher.
The incident came after a week of protests sparked by the suicide of a student at the school. On February 19, members of Students Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the ruling CPI(M), organized a demonstration demanding that the school management take appropriate action against the teachers involved.
Relatives of the deceased Prajith (13), a resident of Katur, claim that the boy showed signs of depression when he returned home from school on February 15.
Later, his brother’s testimony revealed that he committed suicide in his room.
