KATHMANDU: The Indian Embassy in Nepal organised a yoga demonstration at the famous Pashupatinath temple premises there on Friday, ahead of the 10th anniversary of International Yoga Day on June 21.
The embassy’s X account posted photos of participants working on various asanas on yoga mats.
The embassy told X that the event was organised to raise awareness about yoga and celebrate the upcoming 10th anniversary of International Yoga Day.
Located on the banks of the holy Bagmati River, Pashupatinath Temple is the most revered Hindu temple in Nepal.
In keeping with this year’s theme, “Yoga for Women Empowerment”, the embassy also organised lectures and demonstrations on the health benefits of yoga for girls and women from Mighty Nepal, an NGO working on women’s welfare and anti-trafficking, it said.
In a 2014 address to the United Nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed designating June 21 as Yoga Day because it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.
It was subsequently adopted by the United Nations and the first International Day of Yoga was celebrated around the world on June 21, 2015.
