Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere. And it’s almost always fatal. Cardiovascular events, including cardiac arrest, are the second leading cause of death in Minnesota, accounting for nearly 20% of deaths.
In 2015, approximately 50% of heart disease deaths in Minnesota occurred before reaching the hospital, and many were due to cardiac arrest.
The Minnesota Department of Health, American Heart Association, Minnesota Ambulance Association, Minnesota Resuscitation Consortium and others are partnering to advance the cardiac safety community. Prevent death from sudden cardiac arrest by:
- Increasing community and public awareness
- Install automated external defibrillators (AEDs) where people live, work, and play
- Educating the public on how to perform CPR
As of 2017, more than 1 million Minnesotans live or work in HeartSafe communities.
Heart Safe Communities helps communities and organizations:
- Educating community members about sudden cardiac arrest and improving heart health
- Train people how to use an AED and do CPR
Heart safe designation
The Heart Safe designation recognizes community efforts to help staff and residents recognize when someone has sudden cardiac arrest and how to respond. Any municipality, county, or organization in Minnesota can apply for HeartSafe designation with the Minnesota Department of Health and the American Heart Association.
More than 1 million Minnesotans live or work in these HeartSafe communities.
