Skidmore College received a $450,000 challenge grant from the Fred L. Emerson Foundation to support the McCaffery Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center. The grant requires Skidmore to match $1 for every dollar raised by February 2025, for a total of $900,000.
The $42 million LEED-certified center is designed to meet the diverse fitness, athletics, health, and wellness needs of all students and includes comprehensive health services, a counseling center, and a health promotion office. It will house facilities and services. . It will also feature extensive fitness and recreation facilities, including a 10,000-square-foot cardio and weight room and dedicated space for exercise and wellness programs such as yoga, meditation, martial arts and spin. This project is scheduled to be completed next year.
“The Emerson Foundation’s generosity will have a tremendous impact in improving the experience of our students,” said Skidmore President Mark C. Connor. “The McCaffery Wagman Tennis & Wellness Center is more than just a building, it’s a testament to Skidmore. Our unwavering commitment to the health of our students is a more pressing priority than ever in today’s university climate.”
The NCAA-standard tennis complex, which includes eight outdoor tennis courts, four indoor courts, a viewing room, and varsity athletic training space, is a central part of the McCaffery Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center. New locker rooms and team meeting rooms renew the university’s commitment to the student-athlete experience while investing in athletic facilities for everyone.

Skidmore opened an outdoor tennis court at the McCaffery Wagman Tennis & Wellness Center and held its first tournament at the new complex last September.
“The benefits of this project are already being felt by our campus community, starting with the completion of new outdoor tennis courts in time for the men’s and women’s team tournaments last fall,” said Gayle, assistant vice president for student affairs and director of athletics. Skidmore and the Emerson Foundation have shared a long-standing partnership over the past 50 years. The foundation has given generously to scholarships, the Arthur Zankel Music Center, and most recently the Billy Tisch Center for Integrative Science.
