The Health, Aged Care and Sport Committee will hold a public hearing on its ongoing inquiry into diabetes this Friday, 16 February 2024, at Parliament House in Canberra.
This hearing will provide the Committee with an opportunity to examine the role of private health care, urban planning and development, and the food and grocery industry in the prevention and control of diabetes. The committee will also hear from representative diabetes organizations and medical researchers.
Committee chair Dr Mike Freelander MP said: “Throughout its investigation, the committee heard about the need to improve the way diabetes is prevented and managed in Australia.” This hearing will examine the cost of diabetes care and ways to increase public awareness of diabetes, obesity, and their complications. ”
“The growing impact of diabetes in Australia, including the increasing prevalence of type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease, is a key factor in our ability to look to the future,” said committee vice chair Melissa McIntosh MP. The committee heard from the Australian Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Diabetes Australia, as well as a range of other organizations, to meet this challenge and improve outcomes in diabetes diagnosis, treatment and management. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on diabetes care.”
The Commission plans to hold further hearings in March 2024. Further hearing details and dates will be available on the Commission’s website as they are announced.
