Diabetes is a disease that occurs when blood sugar levels are too high. An estimated 30 million people in the United States live with diabetes. Approximately one in four people living with diabetes are unaware that they have diabetes. Diabetes disproportionately affects racial and ethnic minorities and other diverse populations.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the level of glucose (blood sugar) in the blood is too high. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that helps move sugar from the blood to cells for energy. If you have diabetes, your body doesn’t produce or use insulin well. Symptoms of diabetes include:
- Increased thirst and urination
- Increased feeling of hunger
- Malaise
- blurred vision
- Wounds that don’t heal
- Unexplained weight loss
- Numbness or tingling in your feet or hands
There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.
type 1 diabetesIt occurs when the body does not produce insulin because the immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin. Type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, but is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. You are at increased risk for type 1 diabetes if you have a parent, brother, or sister with type 1 diabetes.
type 2 diabetes It occurs when the body does not produce or use insulin well. It is usually diagnosed in adults. Factors that increase your risk of type 2 diabetes include:
- being overweight or obese
- Be over 45 years old
- not physically active
- Have a family history of diabetes
- Have ever had gestational diabetes
Who is affected by diabetes?
More than 1 in 10 adults in the United States has type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Racial and ethnic minorities and other diverse groups have a higher burden of diabetes and diabetes-related complications. For example, American Indian/Alaska Native adults are nearly three times more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic white adults.
Diabetic products approved or approved by FDA
People with type 1 or type 2 diabetes use blood glucose meters and test strips to monitor their blood sugar levels every day. The results can help you decide on daily treatment adjustments, know if your blood sugar levels are high or low, and understand how your blood sugar levels change with diet and exercise.
People with type 1 diabetes need daily insulin injections to stay alive and healthy. You can also use an insulin pump or automatic insulin dosing device to give him small, steady doses of insulin throughout the day.
Many people with type 2 diabetes may need to take diabetes medication. These may include tablets, insulin, or other injectable medications.
