- All organizations interested in applying to the AMA Joy in Medicine Health System Recognition Program must first submit an Intent to Apply form to receive automatic updates regarding the application cycle.

We are extending this year’s application cycle to allow organizations to submit applications. Applications are now closed for the 2024 Joy in Medicine Health System Accreditation Program Friday, March 8, 2024, 11:59 PM PST.
During the final days of this year’s application cycle, we will be holding additional drop-in hours before applications close to answer questions about your credentials and provide any other support you may need.
Register for additional drop-in times on Thursday, February 29th from 11 a.m. to noon (CST).

Before submitting an application, your system must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1.CHARM Charter
Sign the Collaborative for Healing and Renewal in Medicine (CHARM) Charter. The CHARM Charter on Physician Wellbeing aims to encourage collaborative efforts among individuals, organizations, health systems, and health professionals to honor physicians’ collective commitment to patients and each other. That’s what I mean.
2. Size of the organization
The AMA Joy in Medicine Health System Accreditation Program is for health systems with 100 or more physicians and/or advanced practice providers (APPs). If your organization has at least 100 physicians and/or APPs, proceed to step 3. If your organization has fewer than 100 physicians and/or APPs in your organization, sign the CHARM Charter in Step 1 and take advantage of other resources provided by the AMA.
3. Doctor’s health status assessment
Complete a physician health assessment conducted within the past three years using one of the validated tools below.

- Maslach Burnout Inventory
- Mayo Wellbeing Index
- Stanford Professional Fulfillment Index
Only after demonstrating these eligibility criteria can an organization proceed with a full application. All applications must be submitted on behalf of the organization and not individual departments, GME programs, or related operations within the system.

Assessments are based on an organization’s performance and efforts in six competency areas and are evaluated through self-assessment and supporting documentation.
- Assessment: Measuring physician health and burnout is critical to understanding and addressing systemic issues.
- Commitment: A cross-organizational commitment to employee health is essential to preventing burnout within your organization.
- Practice Environment Efficiency: Operational efficiency is key to supporting health. In addition to documentation requirements, workflow and technology inefficiencies play a central role in contributing to physician burnout.
- Teamwork: Effective teamwork can have a profound impact on the overall health of physicians and care teams.
- Leadership: Leadership behaviors lay the foundation for organizational culture and are key indicators of organizational health.
- Support: Fostering connections at work is an important means of increasing professional satisfaction.
